Top Ten Albums of All Time Part 1: Let's Get It On
Now, Here we are. Something I've been meaning to do for a long time but have never got around to it. And since I'm going to try and make an effort....why not start with this. This is more for me than for anyone else, but if you'd like to read on the please do. This is my list of top ten albums of all time. Now, when you create a list as serious as this you need to take several things into consideration. Well, for one, it was to be a quality album. Meaning it is a solid piece of work. Taken as a whole, the album it self must be a work of art. No filler, no fluff. A record you can throw on and listen to back to back and apreciate for the pure genius of the arrangement and production. But then that isn't enough. You also need to look at each song individually and see how they add to the work as a whole.
Now, before I proceed. I have to say. I am no authority. So this is purely my top ten. Don't go tell your music professor that I said that I am the absolute authority...Because I didn't. But, I would like to say...in my defense...that I know a something about music. Also, I would like to say that these are not ranked. It they do not come in any particular order. These ten albums, what ever they turn out to be, will all hold their own weight individually. So no one album is better than the other. They each individually add something to the genre of music they come from and to musical history as a whole. So here we go.
Album number 1: Marvin Gaye-Let's Get it on
Now, few will disagree with me that this is a classic...but most would not have put as much time and thought into it (and if you have then you too are a true disciple of all things funky). Aside from the fact that this record is the most pimp record ever made...I mean not even Ice-T, who is an actual pimp, can touch this album. It is also a musical work of art. From beginning to end. Like I said, no fluff, no filler. If you think I lie....then go ask Kanye how many times he's sampled off this album. I'm sure he would be embarrassed to say.
Released in 1973 on Motwon, this is a short (but tasty) LP. It opens with the classic, "Let's Get it On" (which is a love song to his producers 16yr old daughter...next time you hear it..listen to it well and it will all make sense). But from there it gets so much better. "Please Stay (Once You go Away)" is a little known smooth track that wasn't given as much attention, but is perhaps better than the single "Let's Get it On" that made this LP a classic. From there on it's just pleasure for the ears. Track after track of delicious Marvin songs to serenade your love to. "Distant Lover" (a track that's pretty relevant to me right now) is a personal favorite. And like I said before, a track that Kanye used for on his first album.
This LP is a heavyweight. I would be a fool to not mention it and it should be on everyone's personal top ten. If all you've ever heard of this album is "Let's Get it On," then you're missing out. Go to Tower Records, HMV, Virgin, Limewire....or where ever it is that you go to get your music and listen to this album so you can hear what I mean.
